This week I tried Yoga for the first time. It was slightly painful, but it definitely made me feel my body in all sorts of new places. Don't tell, but I actually liked it a little bit. And it reminded me that flexibility is paramount for success: whether we're discussing the gym or talking about real estate. As a Real Estate Agent, flexibility is an imperative skill. That's because you're working with a volatile and unpredictable variable: humans! Since you deal with so many different client personalities, you have to be flexible, versatile and open-minded. That way you're able to accommodate all types of behaviors, attitudes and points of view. You'll achieve the most success when you can work with an array of clients: from the frazzled, busy Mom looking for a family home to the type-A power suit wanting the perfect city condo, or the holistic gardener searching for a dreamy beach house. In fact, throwing in a wild card and working with new and interesting personalities can be exciting and challenging. By being flexible you keep yourself engaged and stimulated. You'll prevent burn-out; which translates into longevity as an agent. You'll also open the doors for new, unexpected opportunities. Not only does working with clients require a huge amount of flexibility, but working in a changing industry and economy presents another flexibility challenge. Real Estate has evolved in many ways over the last few years. My guess is that we've all had an exercise in flexibility in order to stay on our feet in this economy. It's a compliment to you that you've continued working so hard and been flexible enough to ride the waves of change. Stretching your success by being flexible means adapting a can-do attitude. Instead of cringing at special or odd requests or resenting difficult situations; figure out how to make things work. Approach situations in a positive way and expect successful results even when things feel uncertain or difficult. You'll stand out if you are able to creatively work with your clients, accommodate their personalities and triumph in the face of the unexpected. Can you be flexible enough to please the spectrum of potential business prospects? You'll proably surprise yourself. And who knows? You might even be inspired to take up yoga.
